What are domain extensions, TLD’s and ccTLD’s?

A domain extension is the name given to the last part of a domain name (e.g. .com, .com.au and .co.nz).

TLD stands for Top Level Domain and refers to domain extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .mobi, which do not hold any geographic reference.

The .com extension is the most popular domain extension among all TLD extensions.

ccTLD stands for Country Code Top Level Domain and refers to domain extensions specific to countries around the world. These include extensions for Australia (.au), New Zealand (.nz), United Kingdom (.uk), Hong Kong (.hk) and many others.

There are also region specific domain extensions, like Asia (.asia) and Europe (.eu), which are also considered Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLD).
